Monitoring of Bright Blazars with MAGIC
نویسندگان
چکیده
Blazars, a class of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) characterized by a close orientation of their relativistic outflows (jets) towards the line of sight, are a well established extragalactic TeV γ-ray emitters. Since 2006, three nearby and TeV bright blazars, Markarian (Mrk) 421, Mrk 501 and 1ES 1959+650, are regularly observed by the MAGIC telescope with single exposures of 30 to 60 minutes. The sensitivity of MAGIC allows to establish a flux level of 30% of the Crab flux for each such observation. In a case of Mrk 421 strong flux variability in different time scales and a high correlation between X-ray/TeV emissions have been observed. In addition, preliminary results on measured light curves from Mrk 501 and 1ES1959+650 in 2007/8 are shown.

Monitoring of Bright Blazars with MAGIC in the 2007/2008 Season
Because of the short duty-cycles and observation-time constraints, studies of bright TeV (E>100 GeV) blazars are mostly restricted to flaring episodes or rather short (days to few weeks) multiwavelength campaigns. At the same time, long-term studies of these objects are essential to gain a more complete understanding of the blazar phenomenon and to constrain theoretical models concerning jet ph...

MAGIC has been performing optically triggered Target of Opportunity observations of flaring blazars since the beginning of its scientific operations. The alerts of flaring blazars originate from Tuorla blazar monitoring program, which started the optical monitoring of the candidate TeV blazars in 2002 and has now collected up to six years of data on 30 blazars. These Target of Opportunity obser...
متن کاملOptically Triggered Target of Opportunity Observations with the MAGIC Telescope
The MAGIC collaboration has been performing Target of Opportunity observations of blazars, when seen flaring in optical by Tuorla blazar monitoring program. In past three years, there has been 5 optical alerts during good weather conditions and reasonable declination of the source. Three alerts have resulted in discovery of VHE gamma-rays from previously undetected source. We will introduce the...

Blazars, a subclass of active galactic nuclei in which the jet is aligned very close to our line of sight, can accelerate charged particles to relativistic energies in the jet. Electromagnetic emission from this class of sources can be observed from radio up to TeV energies. The MAGIC telescope is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope with a 17-m diameter dish, located on the Canary Island...

Since 2004, the MAGIC γ-ray telescope has newly discovered 6 TeV blazars. The total set of 13 MAGIC-detected active galactic nuclei includes well-studied objects at other wavelengths like Markarian 501 and the giant radio galaxy M 87, but also the distant the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 279, and the newly discovered TeV γ-ray emitter S5 0716+71. In addition, also long-term and multi-wavelengt...
